I ask because it's what I have to do. Zoe's Tale wouldn't work if it weren't for Zoë. Nonetheless, about a month or so ago I asked Patrick if I could see copies of Lamentation by Ken Scholes and Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi. Although Scalzi revisits the plot of his last novel, his youthful narrator has her own heart-touching and exciting adventures. John Scalzi insists the character is not based on his daughter. Summary: Zoe's Tale is a companion novel to (or a retelling of) The Last Colony. Yeah, using a version number is cliche, but it really is appropriate. This is essentially the same story as told in 'The Last Colony' but from a different point of view. I ate up the Old Man's War trilogy last year like it was a friggin' breakfast burrito during a hangover. Note: I make fun of a quote on the back of this book that really makes no sense here. Soon backstabbing interns, a runaway Cinderella, and cutthroat competition make Zoe's job more like a nightmare than a fairy tale. In this fourth book in the Old Man's War trilogy, John Scalzi takes a page from Orson Scott Card by retelling the events of the third novel, The Last Colony, through the eyes of a teenage girl, Zoë Boutin-Perry. How do you tell your part in the biggest tale in history? Narfna's #CBR4 Review #40: Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi. I'm Zoe Boutin Perry: A colonist stranded on a deadly pioneer world. In some ways, Zoe's Tale is a retelling of The Last Colony from Zoe Boutin-Perry's point of view, and yet it's more. Cover of John Scalzi's Zoe's Tale I've enjoyed all the books in Scalzi's OLD MAN'S WAR universe, but ZOE'S TALE is my favorite. So why would I give it five stars?
